’99 WOMEN’ is all set to be staged in the city of Pune in India in the month of July, 2016. 99 beautiful women from different walks of life living in the city of Pune will come come together to create an extraordinary experience to celebrate their being as a ‘woman’. The French play has been adapted for the local context. The project is completely volunteer driven.

Why Pune?

Pune, located 150 kms from Mumbai has been looked upon as a Rational & Progressive city with a focus on women empowerment and social well-being. Inspired by the traditions of rational thinking saints, Pune became the centre of social bravehearts. In 1848, Savitribai Phule along with her husband Jyotirao Phule worked towards tackling some of the then major social problems like women’s education, and breaking up the silos of the caste system and other social evils.

Modern day Pune boasts of a supportive culture and a springboard of opportunities for women from all over the country and abroad.

A Social Project

99 WOMEN in Pune is a call for solidarity bringing together 99 women uniting a social cause and 01performing arts through a journey that promises to be as liberating as it is empowering. All the benefits of the play will be donated to the project ‘SWAVLAMBAN’ of the organisation, Chaitanya Mahila Mandal, based in Moshi, near Pune.

We are actively recruiting women participants living in Pune with/without prior experience in theatre or choreography. Everyone will be trained in the art forms. Those interested can reach out to sonali@99women.org

We are also looking for sponsors who can help us in the production of the play. Help can be in the form of finances, rehearsal spaces, venue and printing among other production needs. Organisations willing to support us can write to sponsor@99women.org

99 WOMEN will be produced and directed by Sonali Kothari.
